Installing Certificates in Windows 98 - XP Computers

There has been a problem reported with Windows XP SP3 with certificates not being recognized. One reported solution was to download Security Update for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB952069) and install it.

There are two ways to install the LAFN certificates: through direct download and through the Internet Options Control Panel. When you get the download dialog box, if you select the Open button, then the system will try to directly open the Certificate Manager.

If the download did start the Certificate Manager you will see:

Click on the Install Certificate Button. That takes you to step 3 below. If the download did not start then Certificate Manager directly then go to Control Panels and double click on Internet Options.

  1. In the Certificates section select the Certificates button. You will get the Certificate Manager Display:

  2. Click on the Import button:

  3. Click on the Next button:
Either enter the file name of the certificate you downloaded or use the Browse button to find the file.

  4. Click on the Next button:

If you receive the following error message:

Then your system cannot handle that certificate type. Return and download the other certificate type.

  5. If the certificate file can be processed you will receive:

  6. Click on the button to Place all certificates in the following store.

  7. Click on the Browse button

  8. Select the Trusted Root Certification Authorities.

  9. Click on the Ok button.

  10. Click on the Next button.

  11. Click on the Finish button.

  12. Click on the Yes button.

  13. Click on the OK button.

  14. You can click on the Trusted Root Certification Authrities tab and scroll down to the LAFN CA entry. It should be there as shown.

Click on the Close button and close out of all windows.

You can now delete the certificate files you downloaded as they are no longer needed. The system should no longer ask you about using LAFN certificates.
